Northern Lights Concert at the Arctic Cathedral

The northern lights concert in Tromsø: the Arctic Cathedral's Aurora Tunes organ Fridays, its old 23:00 winter concerts, the Midnight Concert in town, and the lights themselves.

Updated October 2026

The Arctic Cathedral’s winter concert series is called Aurora Tunes: half-hour organ concerts on selected Fridays at 17:30 in October and November, NOK 250 for adults, played on the cathedral’s 2005 organ. The 23:00 Northern Lights Concerts that older guides describe were the cathedral’s own until about 2020; the late concert in Tromsø in winter 2026 is Best Arctic’s Midnight Concert, in Tromsø Cathedral in the centre. That one runs every evening and can be booked online, from $32 a person, rated 4.8 from 2,094 reviews (checked October 2026).

Half an hour at 17:30 is the shortest way to hear the organ, and it leaves the evening free. In late November it is dark well before the concert: the polar night begins about 27 November.

Map of Tromsø's two concert churches: Tromsø Cathedral in the city centre on the island, where the Midnight Concert is held at 23:00, and the Arctic Cathedral across the Tromsø Bridge, whose own concerts start at 17:30 on autumn Fridays and 21:00 in summer
Aurora Tunes is in the Arctic Cathedral across the bridge; the 23:00 Midnight Concert is in Tromsø Cathedral in the centre.

The old Northern Lights Concerts

For years the cathedral also held Northern Lights Concerts late in the evening through the winter: traditional music from 23:00 to 23:30, doors at 22:30, tickets at the entrance, about NOK 200 for adults in the last listings we found, from 2019 and 2020. They do not appear in the cathedral’s calendar for 2026, whose winter programme is the Aurora Tunes Fridays, the Christmas concerts and the New Year’s concert. A late concert with the same 22:30 doors and 23:00 start does run in the centre: Best Arctic’s Midnight Concert, in Tromsø Cathedral, the wooden church on Kirkegata.

The northern lights themselves

No concert includes the lights: they appear outside, on a clear and dark night, between late August and early April, and the city’s street lights dim them. If you want to see them, plan a separate evening: a guided chase drives out of town to where the sky is clear, and the Fjellheisen cable car, ten minutes’ walk from the Arctic Cathedral, takes you to 421 metres above the city lights and runs until midnight.

December
