Arctic Cathedral Midnight Sun Concert: Complete Guide

The midnight sun concert in Tromsø: the Arctic Cathedral's 21:00 summer series, the 23:00 Midnight Concert in Tromsø Cathedral, times, prices and how to hear both (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

In summer 2026 the Arctic Cathedral’s own concerts started at 21:00, not at midnight: the “Cathedral of Light” series ran every Tuesday and Thursday, 45 minutes of organ, choir and soloists, from NOK 200. The 23:00 Midnight Concert that most guides and searches mean is Best Arctic’s, held every evening in Tromsø Cathedral, the wooden church in the city centre. That is the one you can book online: from $32 a person, rated 4.8 from 2,094 reviews (checked October 2026).

Map of Tromsø's two concert churches: Tromsø Cathedral in the city centre on the island, where the Midnight Concert is held at 23:00, and the Arctic Cathedral across the Tromsø Bridge, whose own concerts start at 17:30 on autumn Fridays and 21:00 in summer
The 23:00 Midnight Concert is in Tromsø Cathedral in the centre; the Arctic Cathedral’s own concerts are across the bridge, about 20 minutes away on foot.

What happened to the Arctic Cathedral’s midnight concerts

For years the Arctic Cathedral held its own Midnight Sun Concerts at 23:00 through the summer, with tickets of about NOK 180 to 195 sold at the entrance; the cathedral’s event pages for them that we could find date from 2018 and 2019. Many travel guides still describe them. In 2026 the cathedral’s summer evenings were the 21:00 series instead, and the 23:00 slot in Tromsø belongs to the Midnight Concert in the centre, which the regional tourist board’s listing on Visit Norway runs from 1 June 2026 to 31 March 2027 and which Best Arctic presents as a tradition of more than twenty years. Its own listing says it twice: the concert is in the yellow church in the centre, “not the white triangle Arctic Cathedral over the bridge”.

Of the Midnight Concert’s newest 350 reviews, read on 29 October 2026, 281 give five stars. Guests write about the singer’s voice and the sound of the wooden church; two of the few low ratings came from people who had expected the Arctic Cathedral.

The summer 2026 programme in the Arctic Cathedral

The Cathedral of Light series brought visiting choirs from Japan, Sweden and the United States; the Polish organ and saxophone duo Hanna Dys and Szymon Zawodny; the German organist Kai Krakenberg with a concert of Bach’s Goldberg Variations for which the audience lies down; Professor Jens Korndörfer from the United States on 28 July; and the German pianist and composer Ulrike Haage with the cathedral’s organist Thorsten Ahlrichs, premiering “Alles Licht!”. The programme for summer 2027 had not been published when we read the listings in October 2026; it appears on the cathedral’s calendar and on Visit Tromsø.

Hearing both on one evening

On a Tuesday or Thursday in summer the two fit together. The Arctic Cathedral’s concert ends at about 21:45; the walk back over the Tromsø Bridge takes about 20 minutes, and Tromsø Cathedral opens its doors at 22:30, a few minutes from Stortorget. Between about 20 May and 22 July the sun is still up for both. Book the Midnight Concert ahead for the date and buy the summer concert from the cathedral’s programme.

Outside the summer

The Midnight Concert runs through the winter too, and the Arctic Cathedral turns to its autumn organ series, Aurora Tunes, its Christmas concerts and the New Year’s concert: the northern lights concert guide covers the dark season, and the concert schedule lists the dates. If you are choosing between the two churches for a daytime visit, Arctic Cathedral vs Tromsø Cathedral compares them.
