Best Time to Visit Arctic Cathedral: Complete Seasonal Guide

When to visit the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø, month by month: opening hours, the polar night and midnight sun, the northern lights, and the concerts in each season (2026).

Updated October 2026

There is no bad month for the Arctic Cathedral, which is open all year, but each season gives a different visit: from June to mid-August it is open longest, 09:00 to 18:00, under the midnight sun; from late August to early April the northern lights can appear over it after dark; October and November bring the Friday organ concerts, and December the Christmas concerts. For a lit cathedral against a dark sky, come in the polar night, from about 27 November to 15 January, when the afternoon is already dark. In every season the city’s 23:00 concert is Best Arctic’s Midnight Concert in Tromsø Cathedral, from $32 a person, rated 4.8 from 2,094 reviews (checked October 2026).

Hours and concerts from the Arctic Cathedral’s own website; light and the northern lights season from Visit Tromsø; read in October 2026. On Wednesdays outside the summer the church closes from 13:00 to 14:00, and on any day it can close for a funeral or a wedding.

Winter: the polar night and the northern lights

From about 27 November to 15 January the sun stays below the horizon in Tromsø, and Visit Tromsø notes that the mountains hide it from the centre until later in January. The cathedral keeps its usual 10:00 to 17:00, so a visit at 14:00 or 15:00 in December is already in the dark, with the building lit. The northern lights season runs from late August to early April. They can show over the city on a clear, dark night, but the street lights of Tromsø dim them; a guided chase takes you out of the city to where the sky is clear.

Christmas and New Year

December is the cathedral’s busiest month for music: choirs, a brass band, gospel and Jardar Johansen’s Julefred between 5 and 22 December, then the New Year’s organ concert at 21:00 on 31 December. On 24 December it is closed except for the services at 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00; 25 December is open 13:00 to 15:00, 26 to 30 December 11:00 to 17:00, and 31 December 11:00 to 16:00. The concert schedule lists each concert.

Summer: the midnight sun

From about 20 May to 22 July the sun does not set. The cathedral opens longest, 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 June to 15 August, and in 2026 its own summer series played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 21:00. The 23:00 concert people come looking for in summer is the Midnight Concert in Tromsø Cathedral: the midnight sun concert guide explains both and how to hear them on one evening.

In any season the cathedral and the Fjellheisen cable car, about ten minutes apart on foot, make one outing across the bridge.

Time of day and week

Sundays open at 13:00, after the 11:00 service, and Wednesdays outside the summer close for an hour from 13:00. Otherwise the opening hour is the same every day, so plan around the light: a bright morning for the glass inside, the last hour before 17:00 in winter for the building lit against the dark. Opening hours has the full table, Easter included.
