Discovering the Arctic Cathedral: A Traveler's Guide
Visiting the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø: what to see inside, how long it takes, access and toilets, photos and the drone ban, and tours that include it (Oct 2026).
A visit to the Arctic Cathedral takes 20 to 30 minutes: you pay NOK 90 at the door, walk in under the glass front with its cross, and face the great glass wall behind the altar at the far end, with the organ and the chandeliers between. Come in the opening hours, 10:00 to 17:00 on most days, and check the day first, because the church closes to visitors for funerals and weddings. If you want it as part of a driven tour, Tromsø Accessible Tours’ island tour finishes at the cathedral, entry included, before driving you back, from $151 a person, rated 4.9 from 47 reviews (checked October 2026).

Before you go
- Price: NOK 90 at the door; children under 12 and residents of Tromsø free (tickets).
- Hours: 10:00 to 17:00 most of the year, 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 June to 15 August, Sundays from 13:00 (opening hours).
- Closures: during funerals and weddings; the cathedral posts the coming days on its website.
- Address: Hans Nilsens vei 41, 9020 Tromsdalen, at the mainland end of the Tromsø Bridge (getting there).

What to look at inside
The west front. You enter under the glass wall that faces the city, with the cross set into it.
Victor Sparre’s glass. The east wall behind the altar is the reason most visitors go in. Installed in 1972, it shows the hand of God sending three rays of light, through Christ, a woman and a man. Daylight behind it brings out the colour, so a bright day is the time to see it.
The organ. Built by Grönlunds in 2005, with 2,940 pipes and bellows of reindeer hide. You hear it only at services and concerts; a Friday evening Aurora Tunes concert in the autumn is the shortest way to do so (concert schedule).
The room. Oak pews, large prism chandeliers, an altar rail and a pulpit, and the stepped panels of the roof overhead. The architecture guide explains how it was built.
Photos and drones
The whole building is best seen from the Tromsø Bridge on the walk over, with the mountains behind it. Drones are not allowed at the cathedral, and the cathedral says that flying one brings a fine. Inside, it is a working church: no photos during a service, a funeral or a wedding. The cathedral’s website also has a digital tour of the interior if you want to see it before you go.
Access, toilets and time
The cathedral is wheelchair accessible, with a ramp to the entrance and a lift inside. There are separate toilets for men and women and an accessible toilet with a baby changing table. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough for the inside; with the walk over the bridge each way, allow an hour, or an afternoon with the Fjellheisen cable car, about ten minutes’ walk away.
