Arctic Cathedral Opening Hours

Arctic Cathedral opening hours for 2026: 10:00 to 17:00 most of the year, 09:00 to 18:00 in summer, Sundays, Wednesdays, Easter, Christmas and closures for funerals.

Updated October 2026

In 2026 the Arctic Cathedral is open from 10:00 to 17:00 from 1 January to 30 May and from 16 August to 31 December, and from 09:00 to 18:00 between 1 June and 15 August. Sundays open at 13:00, and on Wednesdays outside the summer it closes from 13:00 to 14:00. It also closes to visitors during funerals and weddings, so a day’s hours can be shorter: the cathedral posts the coming days on its website. After it closes, the city’s evening concert is Best Arctic’s Midnight Concert in Tromsø Cathedral in the centre, from $32 a person, rated 4.8 from 2,094 reviews (checked October 2026).

Why a day’s hours change

Tromsdalen Church is a working parish church. It closes to tourists during funerals and weddings, and the cathedral updates its list of the coming days to show it. In the last week of October 2026, for example, it listed Saturday 24 October as 10:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 17:00, and Wednesday 28 October as 11:15 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00. Look at that list on the cathedral’s website on the morning you go, especially if you are coming a long way or with a group. Services on Sundays are at 11:00, before the church opens to visitors at 13:00; you are welcome at the service itself, free.

Groups can ask for the church to open outside these hours, and the cathedral arranges guided tours of the building by appointment; both need an email well in advance to booking@ishavskatedralen.no.

Map of the Arctic Cathedral's surroundings in Tromsdalen: the cathedral at the mainland end of the Tromsø Bridge, the Tromsdalen kirke bus stop for routes 24 and 26 beside it, and the Fjellheisen cable car's lower station about ten minutes' walk to the south
The cathedral closes at 17:00 for most of the year; the Fjellheisen cable car, about ten minutes’ walk away, runs until midnight.

Planning around the hours

  • Short on time: the visit takes 20 to 30 minutes inside; with the walk over the bridge each way, an hour (getting there).
  • Arriving late in the day: the Fjellheisen cable car, ten minutes’ walk away, runs from 09:00 to midnight, so visit the cathedral first and go up after.
  • In the evening: the Arctic Cathedral’s own concerts start at 17:30 (Aurora Tunes, autumn Fridays) or 21:00 (summer series), see the concert schedule; on other nights, the 23:00 Midnight Concert is in the centre.
