The Guide
Entry, Hours, Concerts and the Walk Across the Bridge
What the Arctic Cathedral costs to enter, when it is open, which concerts are held inside it and which are not, and how to get there from the centre.
The Arctic Cathedral is Tromsdalen Church, the white triangular church across the Tromsø Bridge from the city centre. Entry is NOK 90 at the door, children under 12 go free, and it is open from 10:00 to 17:00 on most days (09:00 to 18:00 from June to mid-August, Sundays from 13:00). The 23:00 “midnight concert” many visitors come looking for is not held here: it is in Tromsø Cathedral, the wooden church in the centre. For that late concert we would book Best Arctic’s Midnight Concert, from $32 a person, rated 4.8 from 2,094 reviews (checked October 2026).

What a visit costs, and when it is open
You do not need to book a visit. Tickets are sold at the door, and the cathedral sets the prices itself:
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Entry | NOK 90 |
| Children under 12 | Free |
| Groups of 15 or more | NOK 85 a person |
| Residents of Tromsø | Free |
| Church services | Free |

The 2026 opening hours run in three seasons: 10:00 to 17:00 from 1 January to 30 May and again from 16 August to 31 December, with Sundays from 13:00 and a break from 13:00 to 14:00 on Wednesdays; and 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 June to 15 August, Sundays 13:00 to 18:00. The church closes to visitors during funerals and weddings, so a given day’s hours can be shorter: the cathedral posts the coming days on its website. Arctic Cathedral opening hours has the holiday hours, Christmas and Easter included, and Arctic Cathedral tickets covers concert tickets and the ways to pay less.
Concerts: which are in the Arctic Cathedral, and which are not
The cathedral is a working parish church with a 2005 organ of 2,940 pipes, and it holds its own concerts through the year. The late-night concert sold to visitors is a different event in a different church:
| Concert | Where | When (2026) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aurora Tunes, a 30-minute organ concert | Arctic Cathedral | Selected Fridays in October and November, 17:30 | NOK 250; children 8 to 15 NOK 150 |
| Christmas concerts (choirs, Julefred) | Arctic Cathedral | 5 to 22 December, evenings | Set by each organiser |
| New Year’s concert, organ | Arctic Cathedral | 31 December, 21:00 | NOK 350; children NOK 100 |
| Summer concerts, “Cathedral of Light” | Arctic Cathedral | Tuesdays and Thursdays in summer, 21:00 | From NOK 200 |
| Midnight Concert (Best Arctic) | Tromsø Cathedral, city centre | Daily, 23:00 | From $32 |
On a phone, swipe the table sideways for the prices.
Arctic Cathedral concerts and prices from the cathedral’s own event pages and Visit Tromsø, read in October 2026; the Midnight Concert from GetYourGuide (checked October 2026).
The Arctic Cathedral’s own 23:00 Midnight Sun and Northern Lights concerts, which many older guides still describe, appear in the cathedral’s listings we found up to 2020; the 23:00 concert sold for 2026 is Best Arctic’s, in Tromsø Cathedral. Two of the few low ratings among its newest 350 reviews came from guests who had expected the white church across the bridge, so read the address before you book. The concert schedule lists the dates, and the midnight sun concert and northern lights concert guides explain what runs in each season.

What is inside
The church was inaugurated on 19 November 1965 to a design by the architect Jan Inge Hovig: eleven aluminium-clad concrete slabs on each side of the roof step down towards a glass front with a large cross. Inside, the east wall is filled by Victor Sparre’s glass mosaic of 1972, a hand of God sending three rays of light through Christ, a woman and a man, and the organ built by Grönlunds in 2005 has 42 stops and pipes from 32 feet down to 5 mm. A visit takes 20 to 30 minutes. The traveler’s guide goes through what to look at, and the architecture guide tells how the building came about.
Getting there from the centre
Walk: the Tromsø Bridge takes you from the centre to the cathedral in about 20 minutes, with the strait and the mountains in front of you. By bus, routes 24 and 26 stop at Tromsdalen kirke (Tromsdalen Church) next to the cathedral; buses take a bank card or a ticket in the Svipper app, no cash, and during the 2026 bridge works some departures skip that stop. There is parking beside the cathedral. The Fjellheisen cable car’s lower station is about ten minutes’ walk further south, so the two fit into one afternoon. How to get to the Arctic Cathedral has the bus stops, the bridge works of 2026 (reopening to cars no later than 27 November, Svipper reported on 20 October) and the walk to the cable car.
When to go
In winter the cathedral is best seen lit at dusk, which in the polar night, from about 27 November to 15 January, means early afternoon. From about 20 May to 22 July the sun does not set, and from June to mid-August the cathedral stays open to 18:00. The best time to visit goes month by month, and Arctic Cathedral or Tromsø Cathedral explains the two churches that share the name “cathedral”.
Entry prices, opening hours, concert dates and the bus routes from the Arctic Cathedral’s own website, read on 29 October 2026; the summer concert series and the polar night and midnight sun dates from Visit Tromsø; the Midnight Concert’s time, place and price from GetYourGuide, read in US dollars on 29 October 2026. Architecture and organ figures from the cathedral’s page about the church.

Arctic Cathedral FAQ
The questions people ask before visiting the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
NOK 90 a person, paid at the door; children under 12, residents of Tromsø and people coming to a church service go free. Groups of 15 or more pay NOK 85 each. Concerts are ticketed separately, from NOK 200 to NOK 595 depending on the concert, read on the cathedral's own pages in October 2026. No: entry tickets are bought at the door, and the cathedral does not sell timed entry. Concerts are different: Aurora Tunes is sold at the door and online, the New Year's concert online through the cathedral's Hoopla page, and the Christmas concerts through each organiser. The 23:00 Midnight Concert, which is in Tromsø Cathedral in the centre, is sold online on GetYourGuide.
In 2026, 10:00 to 17:00 from January to the end of May and from mid-August to December, and 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 June to 15 August. Sundays open at 13:00, and on Wednesdays outside the summer the church closes from 13:00 to 14:00. It also closes to visitors during funerals and weddings, so check the coming days on the cathedral's website. Arctic Cathedral opening hours has the Christmas and Easter hours.
Not in 2026: the 23:00 Midnight Concert sold to visitors is Best Arctic's, in Tromsø Cathedral, the yellow wooden church in the city centre. The Arctic Cathedral's own evening concerts start earlier: 17:30 for Aurora Tunes in the autumn, 21:00 for the summer series. The midnight sun concert guide explains what runs where.
Walk across the Tromsø Bridge, about 20 minutes, or take bus 24 or 26 to the Tromsdalen kirke stop next to the church. Buses take a bank card or a Svipper app ticket, no cash; during the 2026 bridge works some departures skip that stop. There is parking beside the cathedral, and the Fjellheisen cable car is about ten minutes' walk further on. How to get to the Arctic Cathedral has the details.
No. The Arctic Cathedral is Tromsdalen Church, a parish church from 1965 on the mainland side of the bridge; Tromsø Cathedral is the wooden church of 1861 in the city centre, the cathedral of the diocese. Both hold concerts, which is where visitors mix them up. Arctic Cathedral vs Tromsø Cathedral sets them side by side.
About 20 to 30 minutes inside, or an hour with the walk over the bridge each way. Add the Fjellheisen cable car next door and it makes an afternoon. A concert adds 30 to 90 minutes, depending on which one.
No. Drones are not allowed at the Arctic Cathedral, and the cathedral says that flying one brings a fine. On foot, the Tromsø Bridge gives a view of the whole building from the city side.
